Acceptance is the Answer; A Journey Back to Joy

As hard as it may be, acceptance is the answer when faced with the un-faceable.

Regardless of the event, whether it be a painful job loss, or loss of a loved one, the experience of shame, fear, grief, financial insecurity or humiliation, acceptance is the answer to finding our path to peace and our journey to joy.

As I write this I am personally working on the acceptance of a miscarriage in my life. And although it is extremely tough at times, my heart knows the truth of acceptance.

I cannot go back in time and re-write my history, but I can choose how I cope and react to the events.

Virginia Satir, a renown family systems therapist constantly reinforced in her work that healing is never about the event or the trauma itself, but it is about our coping strategy.


"Acceptance is the Answer to all my problems today..."

The title above is a quote taken from the Alcoholics Anonymous book. It goes on to say:

"When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation - some fact of my life - unacceptable to me and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is suppose to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake."

In essence, whether you want to use the word God, or Universe, or Cosmic Energy, there is a higher plan, a plan that is so BIG that we could not possibly see its dimensions. And laid out in that plan is a divine gift.

Right now, that gift is likely being shown to you as sorrow, anger, fear or some other form of suffering. But hold tight to the knowing that as you unwrap those emotions through the power of acceptance, you will be holding a precious gem.

Time, hindsight, will help bring clarity to the why's and what if's. So for now, with all your might, find comfort and solace in the gentle embrace of acceptance is the answer.

"When the Lord Closes a Door, Somewhere He Opens a Window"

This quote is taken from my favourite movie of all time, "The Sound of Music", when Maria had no idea what her future would bring. Somehow, she tapped into the truth that acceptance is the answer and she found the ability to trust that something new would soon be arriving.

When we find ourselves in need of acceptance, there is always an ending of some kind or another, followed by a period of uncertainty that may be wrought with fear and anxiety over what the future holds.

The thing that we forget is that with all deaths, there is also a re-birth. With all endings, there are beginnings.

Even if we do not yet see what the world is ushering in for us, be assured that it is waiting upon the threshold.

And yes, acceptance is the answer to unlocking and unbarring the door to that threshold.

A Meditation for Acceptance is the Answer

When we are faced with the realization that acceptance is the answer, sometimes our bodies are already in a state of overdrive and overwhelm, making acceptance a near impossibility.

There are many signs of stress and effects of stress that we need to be aware of in order to avoid the trap of getting stuck in the cycle of stress, and this website offers a number of great tips and techniques for how to relieve stress, but I want to focus here on a particularly wonderful meditation exercise for acceptance.

This meditation is taken from page 124 in a book called: Woman's Book of Meditation, by Hari Kaur Khalsa.

By the way...this is a great meditation for men too!

  1. Come onto your hands and knees and stretch your neck up to look at the sky.

    Be aware if you have neck problems, but this pose is meant to apply pressure to the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the neck area and an area in your brain that will allow you to release the area of frustration in your life.

    Hold this posture and begin deep breathing for 1 minute.
  2. Now sit back on your heals and come into Baby Pose with your forehead resting on the ground. This posture will stimulate the pituitary gland in your brain.

    Relax in this posture for 4 minutes and let all the tension drain from you as you allow the pranic energy come into your body and flow through your entire body, nourishing, relaxing and supporting you completely.
  3. Sit up now with a straight spine, still sitting on your heals (if you have bad knees, come into whatever posture is comfortable with a straight spine). Raise your neck up once again to look at the sky (being aware if you have any neck trouble).

    Begin to laugh!

    Laugh from your belly as is taught in laughing yoga. Laughing will help you to lighten up, let go of all your frustrations and will naturally stimulate the power of acceptance.
