The Rhinoceros in the Living Room: Understanding Chemical Stress in today's toxic world.

Chemical Stress
That rhinoceros is Chemical Stress.

When you mention the word stress to someone, they automatically think of the mental/emotional variety of stress, but there is a rhinoceros in the living room that we have yet to address. And if we don't address it soon, we are in for some serious consequences.

As we discussed on a previous webpage, there are many types of stress types of stress. However, in today's toxic world, we have a responsibility to explore the massive amount of chemical stress that we are exposed to on a daily basis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has acknowledged environmental pollution as the underlying cause in nearly 80% of all chronic degenerative diseases. Toxic chemicals and metals have the potential to negatively impact every biological function occuring within your body.

Doctors from the University of California and the Boston Medical Center have released findings, linking common chemical pollutants to at least 200 different human diseases. Data from hundreds of research studies over the years has shown strong correlations between various common chemical stresses and a wide range of diseases. These include, but are not limited to:

  • asthma
  • testicular atrophy
  • cerebral palsy
  • kidney disease
  • heart disease
  • hypertension
  • diabetes
  • bronchitis
  • hyperactivity
  • deafness
  • sperm damage
  • Alzheimer's
  • Parkinson's diseases

This study also linked pollutants to 37 different types of cancers.

I don't know about you, but can you even name 37 different types of cancer?

This is serious business and we had better wake up.

Dr. Philip Landrigan, a pediatrician at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine has estimated that Chemical Pollution is responsible for all lead poisoning cases, 30 percent of asthma cases, 10 percent of neurobehavioral disorders and 5 percent of pediatric cancers.

This is not just affecting seniors here. We are playing Russian Roulette with the lives of our children.

There are thousands of chemicals, how could we possibly discuss them all?

We cannot, nor could we pronounce them all, but here is a sample of the various types of chemicals that pollute our earth and our bodies.

  • Industrial chemicals
  • Chlorinated solvents
  • Products of combustion
  • Pesticides
  • Dyes
  • Radiation and Drinking Water Disinfection
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Synthetic Hormones
  • Fire Retardants
  • Research Chemicals
  • And MORE...

What can I do about Chemical Stress?

Honestly, for the average person, there is not a lot you can do - at least not on a global level.

But, what about on an individual level?

First you can educate yourself. Know what is going on in your own country in terms of chemical stresses and specifically in my own area. For those of you in Canada, please follow the link to Pollution Watch.Org and check out what is happening in your own area. Find out what toxins industry is dumping in your own back yard (even 1 km away). For those in the USA, go to Score Card.org.

From a place of education, make conscious choices.

Will I purchase shampoo and detergents made from petrochemicals, or will I spend a few pennies extra for an all-natural, organic and biodegradable alternative?

Will I support the local farmers and organic and/or fair-trade food producers or will I continue to purchase whatever is the best bargain?

In reality, there is no alternative or bargain when we are dealing with chemicals that cause DEATH.

Chemical Stresses that are no-brainer's to avoid

Here are my top 5 tips that are not only relatively simple, but will reduce your chemical consumption considerably. Remember, you vote with each purchase you make. So tell the industries what you want and what you are willing to support.

  1. Choose organic and locally grown foods whenever possible
  2. Drink plenty of water, but non-chlorinated water, or use carbon filters to remove excess and harmful chorine contaminants
  3. Minimize your use of plastic (grocery bags, water bottles, kitchen bowls and containers, food wrap, children's toys, etc)
  4. Remove yourself from ALL pharmaceuticals. Seek a natural healer to balance your body. Chemicals disguised as prescription medication are never a good long-term solution.
  5. Switch to all natural personal care products: soaps, shampoos, cosmetics, perfumes, detergents, deodorants, creams and lotions. Check out websites like Not Too Pretty.Org.

Any Other Suggestions, this Rhinoceros is HUGE?

There is so much to speak about on this topic. Essentially, I'd say start reading food and product labels, begin to read books like "Slow Death by Rubber Duck" or link up with The Green Guide, site on the internet. quest

Yes, the more you know, the greater your chances of becoming a hypochondriac, but also, the more you know, the greater your chance of keeping yourself and your family HEALTHY.

Oh, and learn to Detoxify!

I have compiled a number of detoxification resources on my Detox Cleanse Page. Also, check out the section of the website called Yoga Breathing Exercises, which is about learning to breathe, one of the most basic detoxification techniques in the world.

If you have any questions, just ask.
