The Link Between Cortisol and Stress is the Cornerstone of Disease

Stress is rampant and it is vital to understand the link between cortisol and stress in the management and prevention of all stress related illness.

In previous articles we have focused on the various stress hormones and the challenges of chronic stress and adrenal exhaustion. Now, it is time to focus on the link between cortisol and stress in terms of what happens when the body's cortisol levels remain unbalanced.

Prolonged and elevated cortisol levels cause the following effects in the body:

  • Elevated blood glucose levels, which will eventually lead to rises in insulin levels and challenges with insulin sensitivity and potentially diabetes.

  • Increased fat formation, especially in the upper body, leading to that all too familiar fat stomach.

  • Increased levels of circulating estrogen, which can lead to breast disease, breast cancer, uterine or cervical cancers.

  • Decreased Immunity leading to immune system disorders of varying degrees, from more frequent colds to allergies to even cancer.

  • Lowered progesterone production, which leaves us susceptible to both breast cancer and osteoporosis.

  • Increased testosterone production, which once again creates sex-organ related diseases.

  • Decreased efficiency of thyroid hormones, which further alters our body's metabolic rate.

  • Decreased Melatonin Production, which is essential for proper sleep and maintaining an alert mental capacity rather than issues of brain fog.

Final Analysis of the Cortisol and Stress Link

Avoid prolonged and chronic stress at all may not kill you like drinking a bottle of bleach, but it will do you in just the same. Instead of death in minutes, your suffering will be prolonged and your quality of life whittled away.

Remember that disease is not a single event, but an accumulation of abuses. And, whenever you are dealing with stress, you are also dealing with its nasty sidekick cortisol.

The bottom line in terms of the cortisol and stress link is inflammation, fat storage, immune suppression, and metabolic irregularities.

Dis-ease or eventually Disease. It is up to you not to let it get that far.
