The Dangers of Artificial Sweeteners

ArtificialSweeteners

The dangers of artificial sweeteners are massive. And if you think you are doing something good for yourself by choosing 'diet' and 'zero' calorie alternatives think again.

There is not much that I stand up to with this much ferocity, but with absolute certainty, I want everyone to hear this message: Artificial Sweeteners are Dangerous and even Deadly.

Sugar toxicity is a whole other story that I'll cover in a different article, but at least sugar is something natural that your body knows how to metabolize. All artificial sweeteners on the other hand are chemicals that your body cannot break down and therefore are 100% toxic to your body.

Do not kid yourself. Even at small doses, there are still big dangers of artificial sweeteners.

Let me ask you this: "Would you be ok with adding a small drop of arsenic, lead or mercury to your morning coffee?" It is just a 'drop' after all. Heck no, a drop is a drop and if it is toxic, then why would you want to use it even in small proportions?

The other big argument I hear in favour of artificial sweeteners is: "It must be safe if the doctors are recommending it."

Once more, my message is “think again”! Doctors 100 years ago used arsenic as medicine even though it is a known toxin, and as for heavy metals like mercury, doctors still knowingly inject us in the form of vaccines and all under the guise of 'prevention'.

Today they are using artificial sweeteners with the same intention 'prevention'. The only thing these sweeteners are preventing is health!

Five Artificial Sweeteners to Be Aware of:

There are a number of artificial sweeteners that I want you to be aware of, and I want you to be extremely vigilant in reading food labels as they have become very pervasive in foods such as yogurts, sodas, chewing gums, sweetened cereals and various ‘snacks’.

There are in fact five different and dangerous compounds approved for consumer use. They are:

  1. Sucralose: also remarketed under the name Splenda®
  2. Aspartame: also sold under the names Equal®, NutraSweet® and Sugar Twin®
  3. Saccharin: also known as Sweet'N Low
  4. Acesulfame Potassium: also known as Acesulfame K, Ace-K or Sunett
  5. Neotame

Of these five, sucralose and aspartame and the most common and most dangerous, but I'd like to look at the research on each of these substances.

Some of the research on the dangers of artificial sweeteners is as follows:

Danger of Splenda, i.e. Sucralose:

  • The new kid on the block and was only fully approved for use in 1999.
  • Its claim is that it is made from sugar and it can be used for cooking so it has risen in popularity, but that does not change the fact that it cannot be fully absorbed or digested.
  • It is NOTHING like sugar however, and was discovered while trying to create a new insecticide. It starts with sugar but it altered in the presence of chlorine, formaldehyde, toluene and a number of other nasties.
  • Although the long term studies on toxicity do not yet exist (the longest study being done was 4 days!), short-term animal studies associate Sucralose with gastrointestinal disorders (bloating, gas, diarrhea, nausea, destruction of good bacteria, skin irritations, chest pains, anxiety, wheezing, cough, depression, mood swings, etc. In essence we are becoming the long-term research study the more we consume.
  • The book "Sweet Deception" by Dr. Joseph Mercola, M.D. discusses the dangers of sucralose in much greater detail.

Dangers of Aspartame:

  • Found in 1965 and has been subject to heated debate and 'conspiracy' theory since.
  • Aspartame has been investigated by independent researchers to be a possible cause of headaches, dizziness, nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, joint pain, memory loss, depression, malignant brain tumors, mental retardation, birth defects, seizures/epilepsy, Parkinson's Disease, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus and Diabetes.
  • Yet all of the research conducted by manufacturers of aspartame continually show 'evidence' to the contrary and 'prove' continuously its safety.
  • There are even disturbing reports in an official United States Air Force publication warning Air Force pilots to not consume Aspartame in any amounts at all, for these very reasons that manufacturers deny.
  • A great book for further Aspartame info is called "Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic", written by Dr. H.J. Roberts, M.D.

Sacharin:

  • Discovered over 100 years ago when researchers were working on coal tar derivatives.
  • A 1977 research paper demonstrated bladder tumors in rats exposed to high doses of saccharin.
  • Although there is 'insufficient' evidence to indicate this happens in humans, I would suggest even a potential carcinogen be eliminated from food, especially for pregnant and breast feeding moms and for infant formulas.

Acesulfame Potassium:

  • Approved as an artificial sweetener since 1988 and it contains the carcinogen methylene chloride.
  • Long-term exposure to methylene chloride can cause headaches, depression, nausea, liver disorders, kidney challenges and cancer in humans.

Neotame:

In 2002, the FDA allowed a 'new and improved' version of aspartame onto the market.

  • Neotame is chemically the same as aspartame, but without the phenylalanine dangers for those with PKU disease.
  • But because of the chemical similarity, do not be fooled...it can cause the same disorders and diseases as listed above!
  • What about Diabetics and the Dangers of Artificial Sweeteners?

Interestingly, these deadly sweeteners are often referred to as 'sugar substitutes' to get away from the name 'artificial' and make it more palatable. Just like baby cow has been renamed veal, if we change the name enough, our minds are able to 'justify' consuming it.

The diabetic population has been particularly marketed towards, but make no mistake, the dangers of artificial sweeteners is just as real to a diabetic, perhaps even more so.

Again I ask you to make a common sense choice: are you willing to sacrifice all the other health issues (including cancer and brain tumors) just to avoid sugar?

Diabetes is about limiting sugar, so do so, in a healthy and natural way. And if you want an alternative, try Stevia:

    • Stevia has virtually no calories (by the way, 1 packet of Splenda has 4 calories),
    • Stevia contains no sugar (by the way Splenda is so sweet on its own that 99% of Splenda is in fact sugar, but because there is less than 1 gram of sugar in each packet, they are not required to include sugar on the ingredients label)
    • Stevia has no affect on blood sugar because it is a naturally occurring extract from the leaf of a plant.

Because of the hidden calories and sugar in Splenda, diabetics who eat a lot of 'diet' and 'calorie-free' snacks could still experience high blood sugar and continue to worsen their condition.

Dangers of Artificial Sweeteners: Weight Gain

For similar reasons as above, if you are trying to lose weight by cutting back on sugar calories, Splenda is not the way to go, and sacrificing long-term health with other toxic sweeteners is a big No-No.

One key thing you should know is that the body stores toxins in fatty tissue. So the more toxins you consume, the more fat reserves your body will need to deposit the 'trash'.

Also, we know that choosing 'diet and 'no-calorie' foods is not associated with weight loss. As far back at 1970, the Nurses' Healthy Study found that weight gain was associated with saccharin use. Again in the 1980's, the American Cancer Society found that artificial sweetener users gained weight more regularly than non-users.

One proposed reason is that our body is wired to associate sweetness with calories and satiety. But when we remove the calories, we can still taste the sweetness, but we are left feeling 'empty' and continue to crave more calories - a vicious cycle. To make matters worse, all artificial sweeteners are hundreds times sweeter than sugar, thus magnifying the sugar cravings.

    In Conclusion:

Well, this was a long article, but there is much to be said about the dangers of artificial sweeteners. Simply, avoid them at all costs!

If you are still un-convinced, read the book suggestions I've listed above and take a stand for your health.
