Employee Wellness Programs for your 'Sick' Infrastructure

My dream is to walk into a workplace where my services and employee wellness programs are not needed.

I have yet to witness this.

Because society as a whole needs so much assistance in terms of wellness, by default, nearly all companies globally have a 'sick' infrastructure, and by default need to implement employee wellness programs.

Why? Because employees are the corporation's biggest assets, and if the employees are not well, the company is headed down the corporate death spiral, it is only a matter of time.

I have to admit to knowing all too much about this concept of a 'sick' infrastructure, as I was a business owner too - of a wellness center. Yet, the staff, even in an environment where we discussed wellness all day long, were challenged to maintain their wellness.

What is your Sick Infrastructure Price Tag?

Let's get right to the numbers. I'll go over what the statistics say in a moment, but for now, own what is happening in your own business infrastructure and do the calculations according to the image below.

Ok, do you have your answer? Like the small print at the bottom says, this does not include loss in productivity. That figure loss would be captured in what is called presenteeism, which I discuss on another page.

The numbers don't lie. If you were in doubt before, you should now be very clear on the financial value of an employee wellness program for your company.

Let's take a closer look at the global statistics.

Workplace Stress Statistics:

Workplace stress - we all talk about it but nobody does anything. And that's a shame because the cost of stress is quietly eating away at the productivity of organizations like yours.

In Canada alone, according to Stats Canada, the annual cost of work time lost to stress is calculated at $12 billion dollars.

The figure for the USA is considerably higher. The New York Times reported on Sept 5, 2004 that "Workplace stress costs the nation more than $300 billion each year in health care, missed work and the stress-reduction industry that has grown up to soothe workers and keep production high." The same figure was quoted by Forbes Magazine, NPR, and MSNBC, among others.

What is even more concerning to me is that our work force is not just sick, but extremely UNHAPPY.

Disability claims have been significantly on the rise over the past few years, due mainly to Long Term Disability claims, and the area with the biggest increase is "mental-nervous conditions". Since 1990, depression has been the fourth-leading cause of work days lost through disability and premature death in Canada. (Making the Disability Connection, Canadian Healthcare Manager, April/May, 1999).

On average, corporations lose about 16 days annually in productivity per worker due to stress, anxiety and depression. (American Psychological Association, 1996).

Through my Employee Wellness Programs, one of my primary goals is to create Worker Happiness and Business Happiness.

From a place of authentic happiness, all other issues of productivity, depression, anger, fatigue and job burnout tend to drift into the background of what becomes a successful and resourceful environment.

What is involved in an Employee Wellness Program?

That completely depends on you, your company and your company's goals and resources, however:

  • My primary tenant is to first and foremost create a good working relationship and partnership with all members of the team. As such, we meet and work together to create a solution that will work best for you.

  • I provide the expertise in terms of health, coaching, wellness, stress relief, mindfulness, etc.

  • You provide the expertise of the infrastructure of your company and the goals and resources you would like to expand upon and achieve.
