Om, Two, Three...Count with Me:
The Many Meditation Benefits where Modern Science meets Ancient Yogic Philosophy

Meditation Benefits are tremendous indeed.

Not only are meditation benefits claimed by yogis with shaved heads and robes, but also western science is actually starting to measure what meditation is actually doing in our bodies. And the growing opinion is resoundingly positive.

For example, a 2007 U.S. national survey on Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that in the 23,393 U.S. adults surveyed, 9.4 percent of respondents (representing more than 20 million people) had used meditation in the past 12 months-compared with 7.6 percent of respondents (representing more than 15 million people) in a similar survey conducted in 2002.

This same 2007 survey also asked about meditation use in a sample of 9,417 children. They found that 1 percent (representing 725,000 children) had used meditation in the past 12 months.

This is astounding and something that must be working if so many people are coming on board.

So, first of all, let's start with looking at a complete list of meditation benefits as reported by all the ancient yogic masters, sages and texts. Then we'll go into some of the modern research and look at the specific reports of meditation benefits from the science of today.

Ancient Yogic Reports of Meditation Benefits:

  • Develops the Neutral (meditative) mind.
  • It takes us from a finite to an Infinite perception of reality, by connecting us to the clarity of the soul.
  • It promotes a sense of well-being, inner peace, stability and calm.
  • Develops intuition.
  • Releases reactions and unconscious habits, subconscious fears and blocks.
  • Promotes clarity of mind, mental awareness and the ability to be present.
  • Promotes the ability to focus energy, enhancing effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Resolves core issues of stress-producing patterns.
  • Develops the frontal lobe of the brain, which controls our personality.

(As a reference, the above is adapted from the book: The Aquarian Teacher: International Teacher Training in Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan).

Modern Science Reports of Meditation Benefits:

Meditation, like many of the energy healing modalities I discuss on this website is no longer hocus-pocus or voodoo, witchcraft. The science is starting to quantify what ancient sages have long reported.

There are too many studies to begin to list them all, but I have listed 7 studies that represent the diversity of amazing meditation benefits:

  • Work Related Stress: Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. University of Massachusetts Medical School, recorded brain waves of stressed out employees. All participants had their brains scanned 3 times: at the beginning of the experiment, after 8 weeks of meditation training and after a 4 month follow-up. The researchers found that those in the meditation group showed a pronounced shift in activity of the left frontal lobe of the brain...this means they were calmer and happier (less right brain activity)!

  • Blood Pressure: The American Journal of Hypertension 21, 310-316 (March 2008) reported a study on Blood Pressure Response to Transcendental Meditation.

  • Stroke: A preliminary study reported in the Journal of Disability Rehab, April 2011 investigated the personal experiences and perceived outcomes of nine individuals who had experienced stroke and then interviewed following a 10-week yoga program involving movement, breathing and meditation practices. Participants reported greater sensation, feeling calmer and more connected as well as physical improvements in strength, range of motion and walking ability.

  • Sleep Disturbance: The Journal of Clinical Psychology, 2010; 66 (11), p. 1175-84 is reporting a meditation-based program for individuals suffering from chronic sleep disturbance .

  • Chronic Pain: There is a body of research work indicating that meditation can reduce chronic pain. For example, the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, Vol.8, Number 2, p. 163-190, reported that patients suffering from backache, chronic migraine and tension headaches were able to significantly reduce pain medication.

  • HIV: There is emerging evidence from many studies that shows meditation in combination with alternative and behavioural stress-management programs can buffer decline in HIV-positive individuals.

  • Diabetes: Meditation also aids in controlling blood sugar levels and assists those who are diabetic or pre-diabetic. Steven Rosenzwig, et al, at the University of Virginia have shown that following meditation, there is a reduction in stress hormones which correlate with a decrease in blood sugar levels.
