The very title "Nutrition for Life" means just that - LIFE, not Death.
All too often we make very short-sighted decisions in our life, and when it comes to our health, we cannot afford such luxuries.
We are now discovering that fast food can actually cause brain damage!
Seriously - think about this. This is not only digestive challenges or the assumed heart and liver damage anymore, this is major brain damage we are talking about.
According to a study published in the January 2012 Edition of The Journal of Clinical Investigation, Joshua. P. Thaler and colleagues found that fatty foods damaged a region in the brain called the hypothalamus.
In healthy individuals, the hypothalamus is responsible for producing hormones that control our hunger drives, thirst, sleep, mood and other natural bodily rhythms.
Perhaps this speaks to the reason why it is so difficult for a chronically overweight person to loose weight and keep it off. Their brain needs to be re-wired.
And in yet another recent study in the journal of Neurology, they have shown that eating fast food is connected to an area of brain shrinkage that can lead to Alzheimer's.
So, now that we know the facts, are you ready to understand what Nutrition for Life means?
Nutrition for life, is in my opinion is based on 3 principles:
If you can keep all three principles in mind as you walk through life, you will certainly remain happy, healthy and whole.
Now lets look a little closer at each component...
Nutrition for life is about consuming whole foods and when possible, live foods.
That means, no more (or very limited) packaged and processed food.
Start reading labels and if you do not recognize the name, chances are you should not be eating it.
Food has living enzymes and nutrients in it and the more the food is cooked and processed, the more we kill these important and vital ingredients. I'm not saying that you cannot cook anything, but a goal to work toward is eating at least 51% of your food in its natural, whole and uncooked state.
And yes, that means you will have to start loading up on more veggies, and Hold the Beef!
I'm not suggesting that everyone become vegetarian either, but moving towards a more balanced vegetarian to animal protein diet is important.
For some key tips of the trade, you might want to check out the following pages of the website as they become available (I apologize in advance if they are not yet ready, I have so much info that I want to share, please bare with me):
Every body is UNIQUE. That means there is no one diet that can be applied to everyone for maximum results.
Only you know how you feel when you eat a particular food. Tune into the subtler signs of how a particular food is digested - does it give you adequate amounts of energy?
What most people do not realize is that the goal to nutrition for life is to eat the least amount of food that gives you the maximum amount of energy. So that means if you are craving green salads for three days straight and by eating them you feel totally energized, then by all means do so.
But if you are eating nothing but salads and you feel tired or lethargic and hungry an hour later, you need to do some tweeking.
Your body will tell you what it needs, you just need to listen to it.
There are however general principles that will guide healthy choices and overall wellbeing. Here are some suggestions that you may like to investigate:
And lastly, nutrition for life is about more than your body. It is about your mind-body connection. It is about nourishing your entire human energy system.
For instance, did you know that negative thoughts alone can destroy your ability to digest your food and take in nutrients?
So, if you do not monitor the mental-emotional-spiritual component of life, you will never be able to sustain healthy nutrition for your body.
Much of this website is geared toward nourishing the non-physical parts of us and if you feel like you need some tuning up in this area, then by all means gobble up some of these topics:
