Prenatal Kundalini Yoga: Connecting Mom and Baby with Grace, Strength and Inner Knowing

Prenatal Kundalini Yoga emphasizes the inner knowing of the mother and the baby to experience the magically transformative and powerful event of birth from a place of strength, grace, purpose and wisdom.

Pregnancy yoga, as all yoga disciplines, will train a woman’s mind and body for the experience of birth. Although pregnancy yoga will not alter the intensity of the birthing experience itself, it will increase the mother's awareness and her intuitive projection, thereby allowing her to feel safer in her own body and transform the intense and challenging moments into natural, 'doable' and welcome ones.

My mentor, Gurmurkh Kaur Khalsa, says this about pregnancy and yoga:

"As a woman lives, so shall she birth".

This short sentence resonates with my own inner knowingness and why I am so passionate about sharing all that I do on this website, and in particular this page on pregnancy yoga.

It is with great honour that I share with you below my knowledge and love of prenatal kundalini yoga! Please continue to read below...

What does a typical Prenatal Kundalini Yoga Class look like?

Although each prenatal kundalini yoga class is unique, depending on the mom's and the baby's needs, we cover a number of general topics in each class.

Throughout the prenatal kundalini yoga class, our primary intention is to assist moms to tap into their sensitivity, their awareness, their sensuality, their spirituality and their own inner knowingness. Here is what that looks like:

  • Gentle flexibility exercises and yoga postures designed to stretch, tone and relax the mind, the emotions and the body.

  • Certain poses will be aimed to alleviating common discomforts of pregnancy, such as sciatica, digestive difficulties, fluid retention, etc. We will teach you how to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles as well as different postures that will be valuable during labour itself.

  • Yoga Breathing Exercises to open and expand the body and prepare the woman to know what to do in birthing and even beyond, as their babies will be with them for years after and knowing how to breathe is the very essence of good health and well-being for the entire family.

  • A special 3 minute 'keep-up' exercise designed specifically to safely push you to your physical limits and self imposed barriers. Labor and deliver will without a doubt do this for you, so why not find out how powerful and strong you are as a woman NOW!

  • We will use rhythm, music and dance to connect with our babies. Babies love to sway to the music and bounce up and down – it gives them great comfort and we'll have time during class to do just that.

  • Vocalization and Meditation Mantra to assist mom's in finding their inner voice required to facilitate labor and delivery

  • Specific meditations to aid in connecting the mother to their own inner wisdom, their own strength and their own grace.

  • Relaxation Tips and Techniques designed to release stress, focus and calm the mind, and allow expectant mom's a chance to connect with their growing baby forming a loving bond even before birth.

And above all else, prenatal kundalini yoga classes provide the time and space for moms to connect with each other – to share, nurture and support each other on this amazing journey of Motherhood.

What's in it for Baby?

When I look around the room at all the moms sitting on their yoga mats in front of me, I often, and silently, ask myself “Who brought them here tonight? Was it mom’s choice or the baby's?”

Sometimes it is mom who is keenly wanting to learn ways to deepen her own sense of peace and harmony within and to experience a natural birth process. Perhaps she has some fears and doubts that she needs to heal during her pregnancy and yoga is the vehicle for that healing. And perhaps the mom has already been doing regular yoga classes and this is a natural extension for her in pregnancy.

OR... perhaps it is the baby who dragged mom to class!

Sound odd? Not really.

Our babies in our wombs are directing their own soul's journey, and if they need yoga to be part of that process - to heal something in utero, to feel safe in this new world, or to prepare for a natural birth - you better believe that they will tap into mom's psyche and get her signed up for class!

For starters, yoga babies receive increased oxygen and endorphins as mom stretches and tones her body, relaxes her mind and discharges any stored emotion.

The movement of the yoga postures themselves, also gently massages the baby and creates an inner, cellular memory of relaxation. This is something your baby will remember for the rest of their lives.

For this and so many other reasons, prenatal kundalini yoga is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your baby.

Where do I teach?

I primarily teach from the yoga space I have created in my home in Cambridge, Ontario, or by request I can come to your home for a private or semi-private class.

I also love teaching at various birth education groups, so simply invite me to come out for a special class in your area.

And at some point in the near future, I plan to have a number of prenatal DVD's available for purchase, so that you can practice pregnancy yoga from the comfort of your own home, each and every day of your pregnancy!

As always, if you have any questions or comments, I'd love to hear from you.

Yours in Wellness,

Dr. Lisa
