The root chakra grounds us in life - just like the roots of a tree hold the magnificent oak in the physical earth.
It supports us by allowing us to feel safe, secure and stable in what can feel like a somewhat unstable world. It allow us to stand strong even in the midst of a storm.
Have you eve watched a tree in a windy storm? 100 feet above the earth, the branches of the tree sway to the wind, yet the massive root system holds stead fast to secure the tree from harm.
When we have a strong and balanced root chakra, we are able to weather the storm of life, feeling grounded and centered, stable and at home. It is our basic sense of survival. Without it, we feel insecure, fearful and like we do not belong.
This is our first or Muladhara chakra, as it is known in Sanskrit. It is literally translated as meaning root or foundation. It is derived from the earth element and provides for us all our earthly needs.

The root chakra is physically found at the end of the spine, an area known as the coccyx or tail bone. It is related to the anus, colon, legs and feet.
The energy of the first chakra vibrates at the light frequency of the color red.
When we enter this world as a baby, we are ejected from a warm and cozy, safe environment of our mother's nurturing womb, into a cold and sometimes hostile environment.
Depending on our early life experiences, we develop a strong or a weak first chakra. If we do not have a supportive and nurturing early infancy period, if our basic survival needs are not met or if our parents themselves feel insecure, we do not learn how to utilize our root chakra energy efficiently.
This leads to a number of core emotional, health and life survival issues:
When properly nurtured as a young infant, and when surrounded by secure and balanced parents, we learn to pull energy up through our first chakra in a balanced and harmonious way.
Remembering that chakra imbalances are either due to too little or too much energy. In a balanced system, there is a constant state of flow where the energy coming in equals the energy leaving. Just like the air we breathe, we want to inhale in the same amount as we exhale to create a balanced body, brain and blood vascular system.
In a balanced state, the root chakra will manifest as follows:
There are many detailed yoga sets and meditations that we could discuss when looking at balancing each of the 7 Chakras.
Because of the need for proper and supervised instruction, I go into great detail on healing and balancing the chakras in my Chakra Kundalini Yoga Retreat Program, but for now, let me leave you with a few poses to get you started at home:
