If Stress Hormone was the name of a 16th century emperor, he would have conquered the entire world, hands down!
I on the other hand, would love to see everyone in the world take those pesky stress hormones down a few notches. Stress is literally killing us, and I'll help you to understand what is happening in our bodies.
Three Types of Stress Hormone:
Adrenaline is the most famous of the 3 stress hormones and the fastest acting. It acts like an 'upper' and causes us to rev up our systems very quickly in order to meet a demand.
Nor-adrenaline is our bodies 'modulator' drug and it allows us to stay revved up (at a high RPM) without too much risk anything catastrophic like sudden cardiac death.
Cortisol is like our bodies 'downer' drug. Our body is very wise and when it knows that we've been revved up for too long, it injects us with cortisol to help bring us back down to earth.
Take a look at the diagram below. This is what our stress hormones do during short-term stress:
This is essentially what happens during our fight or flight response. Our body rev's up its engines in order to deal with the situation at hand.
The problem is that when we are under a period of chronic stress, our body is shooting out a continuous supply of both cortisol to lower our system, and a contradictory supply of adrenaline to help us keep up with the demands.
The Result: Burning the Candle at Both Ends.
The reality of this chronic stress cycle is stress related illness.
You would never drive your car for 20, 30 or 40 years without getting it serviced, an oil change, break job or radiator flush. That is absurd, yet we choose to run our bodies into the ground without taking care of them.
Because our stress hormones are produced in our adrenal glands, we experience adrenal exhaustion, and from here a host of other disease process that can be linked to cortisol overload.
I know you want to change this cycle, otherwise you would not be here trying to understand what is happening. So congratulate yourself on your first steps. Keep reading, learning and kicking those pesky stress hormones to the curb!
