Stress Relief Programs Aim to Improve Personal Adaptability

When looking at any stress relief program you are faced with 2 choices:

  1. Remove the stress
  2. Improve Personal Adaptability.

Actually, I'd say there is a third choice, but at the liberty of sounding harsh, it would be death - or at the very least dis-ease.

When faced with a stress, your body system can only turn around and flee or figure out how to adapt to it. If it is not successful at either of these things, it will inevitably break down, hence death or disease.

In my opinion, removing the stress is the easiest option, but often impossible.

We will continue to be exposed to harmful radiation from our computer screens and environmental chemicals, we will likely continue to sit at a desk job for 8 hours a day rather than being up and about plowing the fields as our fore-fathers did and most of us will continue to be surrounded by negative or judgmental people to some degree or another.

So if we can't always remove the stress, my goal in all of my stress relief programs is to improve personal adaptability.

Bottom Line: My stress relief programs are geared toward getting those stripes back on the zebra!

What is Personal Adaptability?

Personal adaptability has to do with our nervous systems flexibility.

Think about a baby. First off, you can see the flexibility in the system by the way they nonchalantly hike up their foot to suck their toes! Babies have a high rate of neuroplasticity. Simply put, they are neurological sieves. They are taking in extraordinary amounts of information from their environments and what happens in the next few years will largely determine their long-term nervous system flexibility.

By the time we reach our teen years, our nervous system has built in alarm codes and ways of coping and adapting to the environment. However, these hard wired coping mechanisms are often ineffective to meet our demands as we reach adulthood.

No one sat us down and told us that getting angry and holding our breath is a less appropriate stress reducer than consciously taking deep breaths and visualizing a happy outcome, or repeating to ourselves positive affirmations like "I am safe", "I am powerful", "I am capable".

Changing our personal adaptability is about re-learning more appropriate ways to deal with the stress. It is about shifting our threshold for stress and building a more secure foundation for your experience in the world.

Why do I need to improve my personal adaptability?

Because one 5-minute experience of anger is so stressful that it impairs your immune system for over 6 hours!

Because your body is slowly dying and without intervention you will end up very sick.

Because you are stressed.

How do you improve your personal adaptability?

Simply through repeating a new technique.

The only way your brain will learn something new, and likewise, unlearn something old, is through repetition.

My stress relief programs are geared toward teaching you new behaviors that you can repeat in your daily life in order to create a new lifestyle and a healthier, less stressed you.
