What is Kundalini Yoga and how is it different from Other Types of Yoga?

Many people ask "What is Kundalini Yoga", because they have not even heard of Kundalini before.

This is because Kundalini Yoga is very new in the West and most people have been introduced to a form of Hatha Yoga.

So then, What is Kundalini Yoga you ask? To me it is POWER.

Don't get me wrong, I have been a student of all types of yoga, including Hatha Yoga for nearly 20 years, but when I found Kundalini Yoga I just knew that this held something big, something more powerful than I had felt before.

What is Kundalini Yoga's Power?

All types of yoga have a similar aim, to unite the power of the body, mind and soul into one, but the method of achieving the union is extremely different.

Kundalini Yoga is a 'Raj' Yoga, which means 'King' and we all know that a good king is a powerful one. A powerful king unites its kingdom bringing together all its inhabitants under one source, with one purpose.

This is exactly what Kundalini yoga does. Where other disciplines of yoga may focus on one aspect of the mighty kingdom of awareness tools, Kundalini uses all of the following tools in each class. Hence it is a powerful practice for beginners and advanced students alike.

Also, like a truly great king, he knows that spiritual life is important, but that the fields and cities and roads must also be attended. He knows that a powerful spiritual practice for a few hours a day is needed to sustain all our worldly duties.

Kundalini too fits this bill. It was not designed for spiritual seekers wishing to sit in a cave meditating for days. When asked, what is Kundalini yoga, we can answer it is the yoga of householders. It was created for the commoner, to powerfully promote clarity of mind, and physical strength efficiently and effectively so that we can get on with enjoying the rest of what life has to offer.

So when you ask What is Kundalini Yoga?, I would say What isn't Kundalini Yoga!

To answer your burning "What is Kundalini Yoga" question, here is a sampling of the Powerful tools and techniques that Kundalini Yoga Harnesses:

  1. Asana or yoga poses for body flexibility and strength.

  2. Many of the postures in Kundalini yoga are dynamic, rather than static. This is very helpful in reprogramming the mind and in terms of powerful brain fitness exercises.

  3. Breath-work for capturing life force and pranic energy.

  4. Specific pranayama techniques such as breath of fire to help balance your glandular and nervous system, reduce stress and get drunk on oxygen!!

  5. meditation to calm the mind and expand your soul. There are thousands of specific meditations for all purposes under the sun from expanding your aura and electromagnetic field to getting rid of anger. You decide what you need and then go to it!

  6. Specific Kriya sets (specific series of exercises) designed to have a particular effect such as the Kriya for Elevation, or a Kriya for Mind Body Synchronization or a Kriya for Metabolism and Relaxation, and thousands more to deal with any facet of life.

  7. Attention to moving and Awakening the Kundalini Energy.

  8. Balancing all 7 chakras within each kundalini yoga class.

  9. The use of mantras are very diverse in Kundalini yoga. They are written in a language called Gurmurki, a derivation of ancient Sanskrit. The mantras will help you with anything from needing courage to working on your intuition to helping you manifesting prosperity, protection or strength. Whatever you need, there is a mantra that will bring the vibrational frequency and healing energy required.

  10. Uplifting Kundalini yoga music to support all the meditation mantras. I have yet to come across a more beautiful collection of singers and songwriters than those found in the Kundalini yoga circle.
