Kundalini Yoga for Seniors and the Young at Heart

Yoga for Seniors

Teaching a yoga for seniors class is one of my favourite kundalini yoga classes to teach.

As you can see from the above photo, all students are seated in chairs in what we refer to as chair yoga.

For anyone familiar with a typical Hatha yoga class, you may be wondering how you do yoga if you are sitting down. Well, this is where Kundalini Yoga is so powerful.

You see, Kundalini Yoga is not about twisting yourself into a pretzel and doing a bunch of postures that require great flexibility. Instead, much of Kundalini yoga is done in a seated position on the yoga mat...so really, there is not much difference between a traditional Kundalini yoga class and a yoga for seniors chair class.

And because there is not much difference, it is very powerful.

I am amazed at how powerful it really is. For instance, say we did a few exercises such as spinal twists, simple squats, leg lifts, neck and shoulder rotations and some breath work. Many of these exercises are taught to seniors in a regular chair-fit aerobic class, but with one BIG difference...it is not done with the consciousness, precise timing and order of a yoga class.

Believe me, this makes a huge difference. With Kundalini Yoga, all classes are taught exactly the way the masters told us to teach it. As Kundalini yoga teachers we do not make any of it up and so the power of the class is due to its specific design, the same design that existed for thousands of years.

What does a typical Yoga for Seniors class look like?

As with all yoga classes that I teach, we follow a particular format:

  1. We tune in: We begin all kundalini yoga classes by chanting a mantra "Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo". This means "I bow to the creative and divine wisdom within", which is the essence of the practice of yoga – it is about honouring and connecting to our true inner source of wisdom, our Higher Self and Divine Consciousness.

  2. Asana's or Flexibility Exercises: all classes include a series of postures and repetitive motions to aid in expanding the body's flexibility, but also to assist in balancing the nervous system and glandular system. These exercises are typically done while sitting in a chair and are modified if necessary to suit the needs and abilities of our yoga for seniors group.

  3. Deep Relaxation: between each exercise, we have an opportunity to relax and repeatedly tune into the body, growing and expanding our awareness of the present moment. In addition, we have a period of deep relaxation which often includes a teacher directed guided relaxation.

  4. Meditation: We close each class with a meditation. They say that the purpose of all yoga is to prepare the mind for meditation, and so in keeping with tradition, we unite the body, mind and sprit in meditation.

What are the benefits of Yoga for Seniors?

  • Increased Flexibility
  • A calm heart and mind
  • Increased well-being, mood and happiness
  • A greater sense of community and belonging
  • Decreased body tension and pain
  • Increased restful sleep patterns
  • Increased oxygenation and immune function
